Somerset House School, Somerset West

The school fourth quarter is well underway and we were allocated a "croquet club" as part of our Wednesday afternoon clubs - this was exciting news! Being extremely brave, I agree to take up to a maximum of 12 children for the inaugural "croquet club" and am fortunate enough to fill all twelve places - with boys (not a girl in sight) ranging from 10 to 13 years of age.

Our first lesson developed into a bit of a riot, as we were all so excited at the prospect half the lesson was spent trying to dampen our exuberance just slightly. Anyhow, since then we have developed at a rate of knots and the boys are doing a wonderful job of picking up the nuances of the game very quickly. We have been using the smaller of the sports fields since our first lesson and have tons of space to make lots of noise and get very excited when one of our teams scores a hoop.

The boys have been divided up into four teams of three each, choosing a Captain for each team and giving their team a name. We have The Vipers (who are the youngest three boys), Tribute, Sphere and the Gabllabs (don't ask me what that is, I have yet to work that one out). Each week we have been playing matches and keeping score and at the end of the quarter the winning team will be awarded a surprise. So far the youngsters are doing a good job against their older compatriots and are in the lead.

It's just so heart warming to see these 12 boys having such fun on the lawn and learning so much at the same time. A special thanks goes to the Somerset West Croquet Club for the loan of some equipment to make all of this possible.
