2012 Association Croquet Championships

Well, what can I say about the 2012 Western Province Tournament. It has been a truly wonderful tournament – the camaraderie has been of an exceptionally high standard, the weather absolutely perfect and the Somerset West lawns great.

The first couple of days play threw out a few surprises, but in the end the usual suspects made their appearances. The Open Doubles event has been the envy of all the competitors and I believe next year we will definitely see an increase in the number of pairs taking part. The banter, laughs and comic relief seemed to be a pre-requisite and drew the crowds, not only for the standard of play, but also for their comedy and entertainment value.

The class events too have been played to a high standard, and across the board in both the open and class events, the number of long hit-ins has been astonishing.

Special thanks must go to Somerset West Croquet Club, for their hosting the event, providing us with great lawns and the most fabulous teas.

My congratulations must go to not only all the worthy winners – William Louw, George Noble, Lionel Tibble, Peter Dreyer, Silvia Short and Anne Stephens - but to all the competitors – 2012 has been a really special tournament and I look forward to 2013, where we can once again welcome back each and every one of you and some new friends to this special tournament.
