Ian Gillespie - Obituary

Ian, as he was known, started playing croquet in 1956 at Rondebosch Croquet Club in Cape Town, South Africa. He became President of that club and went on to become President of the South African Croquet Association from 1972 to 1994.

He played in the first Springbok team that played a two day test against Scotland in Glasgow in 1976, Ian also led a Springbok team to play against the U.S. in 1982. Following that he was very much involved in croquet in the U.S working for many years with Jack R Osborn the founder and president of the U.S. Croquet Association, Ian produced what has become known as "The Gillespie Report" in it Ian suggested using golf croquet as a useful introduction to real croquet.\

Ian was instrumental in starting croquet at Kelvin Grove Club, Cape Town, giving a talk and video presentation in October 1982 where an amazing number of 80 members were enrolled within a month.
Ian's first career was as chairman and managing director of an oil company subsidiary. After retiring Ian went back to University to obtain BSoc Sci(Hons) and Master's degree in psychology and in 1994 Ian started his second career as a Clinical Psychologist working right up to his sudden death on Monday 15th April 2013.

Ian will be greatly missed by his many friends and fellow croquet players.
He leaves his wife Betty a daughter and a grandson.
