Reg Bamford Wins Gc World Champs

On the evening of Sunday, 28 April, a classic final took place in Cairo between Ahmed Nasr of Egypt and Reg Bamford of South Africa.

The match started at 4pm local time and was decided over the best of 5 games finishing at 8.30. Reg was leading 2-1 and then in the 4th game, Ahmed ran several hoops from across the court and was leading 5-0, eventually taking that game 7-4.

regBamford GCWorldChampsIn the decider, Ahmed was leading 6-2 and it looked all over, but Reg played brilliantly to reach the 12th hoop where he had his two balls in front of the hoop, with his opponent being on the boundary and mid lawn. Instead of running the hoop, he hit Ahmed's mid-lawn ball to the east boundary, getting his own ball on the north boundary in front of the golden hoop. Ahmed missed. Reg ran 12 and then Ahmed tried to block Reg's boundary ball in front of 13, but failed. Reg ran from the north boundary!

This makes Reg the first player ever to hold the Association and Golf Croquet world championship titles simultaneously.
