2015 BOSS Report

Thanks to Henrietta Heim who dreamt up the Best of Seasons Singles (BOSS) competition for Fish Hoek, the sponsored event has been taken up by Rondebosch.
It is an annual handicap contest played over four Sunday mornings from June to September. This year it was calmly managed by Peter Johnson and attracted sixteen players from Rondebosch, Kelvin, Fish Hoek and Somerset West. The compelling attraction of BOSS is the interplay between high and low bisquers at singles.

2015 Gauteng Tournament

The Gauteng Tournament was played over two long weekends at Country Club, Johannesburg at the end of April and beginning of May.

We used one of the bowling greens as well as the best three croquet courts and they were all in good condition and quite fast. The weather was excellent throughout.

2015 WP AC Tournament

The Feb tournament was probably one of the best we have ever had and the spirit in which it was played was extraordinary. Special thanks to Dave Mundy and the “Mundy Bus Mob” - always entertaining, whether it was for good play on the lawns or a guaranteed laugh - a very special bunch of croquet visitors. With a large entry and all the lawns full the entire tournament thankfully the weather kind to us. Well done to all you took part and we look forward to 2016.

SA has two Croquet World Champs!

Judith Hanekom from Somerset West Croquet Club has just returned from Cairo where she played in the Women's World Golf Croquet Championships.
After qualifying for the knockout stage, she then proceeded to beat four of the world class Egyptian lady players on her way to the final.
In that final, she met Jenny Clarke of New Zealand, who for a number of years has been hailed as the best female croquet player in the world in both Association and Golf Croquet.
In a very close best of 5 final, Judith came out the winner and is therefore the new women's world champion.

At the last World Croquet Championship which was also held in Cairo in April 2013, Reg Bamford, also of South Africa, won the title. Reg has been an icon of world croquet for a number of years and had previously won the World Association Croquet Championship several times but that was his first Golf Croquet individual world title.

South Africa therefore has both the World Open and the World Women's titles which is an amazing achievement for a country with around 20 active clubs compared to the hundreds of clubs in many of the other croquet playing countries of the world.

SACA Nationals 2014 (Summary)

The Nationals were held at Pietermaritzburg for the first time in 28 years. Sadly the Association event had to be postponed or possibly cancelled because of a very small entry, but there were 39 golf croquet entrants from all over the country.
Maritzburg CC has three regular courts and in addition were given the use of a bowling green by the Bowls Club which adjoins their premises.
The Committee and Members of the host club worked very hard to organise an excellent tournament. In particular, Tim and Alison Lewin, who were Tournament and Venue Managers, have to be congratulated on the part they played in making the
whole week such a success.
Two of the local schools (Wykeham Collegiate and Cordwalles Prep School) sent students to provide teas and watch the games, and a number of articles covering the championship appeared in the local press.

The results were as follows:
