SA has two Croquet World Champs!

Judith Hanekom from Somerset West Croquet Club has just returned from Cairo where she played in the Women's World Golf Croquet Championships.
After qualifying for the knockout stage, she then proceeded to beat four of the world class Egyptian lady players on her way to the final.
In that final, she met Jenny Clarke of New Zealand, who for a number of years has been hailed as the best female croquet player in the world in both Association and Golf Croquet.
In a very close best of 5 final, Judith came out the winner and is therefore the new women's world champion.

At the last World Croquet Championship which was also held in Cairo in April 2013, Reg Bamford, also of South Africa, won the title. Reg has been an icon of world croquet for a number of years and had previously won the World Association Croquet Championship several times but that was his first Golf Croquet individual world title.

South Africa therefore has both the World Open and the World Women's titles which is an amazing achievement for a country with around 20 active clubs compared to the hundreds of clubs in many of the other croquet playing countries of the world.

SACA Nationals 2014 (Summary)

The Nationals were held at Pietermaritzburg for the first time in 28 years. Sadly the Association event had to be postponed or possibly cancelled because of a very small entry, but there were 39 golf croquet entrants from all over the country.
Maritzburg CC has three regular courts and in addition were given the use of a bowling green by the Bowls Club which adjoins their premises.
The Committee and Members of the host club worked very hard to organise an excellent tournament. In particular, Tim and Alison Lewin, who were Tournament and Venue Managers, have to be congratulated on the part they played in making the
whole week such a success.
Two of the local schools (Wykeham Collegiate and Cordwalles Prep School) sent students to provide teas and watch the games, and a number of articles covering the championship appeared in the local press.

The results were as follows:

Rondebosch CC – Gateball - 30 August 2014

Caroline Burr writes:

What a day we had yesterday with over 30 children ranging from 5 – 16 coming out to play gateball at Rondebosch.
The majority coming from Marsh memorial homes, plus a number of visiting children from grandparents and friends within the croquet world. Mums and carers got involved, and great fun was had by all. It was a perfect day weatherwise! I was a tad worried with Barry Weisner and Clare Stableford being away, that I almost threw the towel in at the last moment!

I am so glad I didn't as we truly had the best turn out we have had to date, and everything ran like clockwork. Thanks to Peter, Jean, Helena, Anne and Andrew. We had a team of almost all teenagers that Peter Meakin and Andrew Peters ran, and from what I have heard it was a killer game! Anne Oxton ran a great croquet coaching on the side with a number of local children that are eager to learn the game!!!! Exciting!
