Kelvin Grove Croquet Club

Back in October 1982, Ian Gillespie, then President of the South African Croquet Association, made a presentation at Kelvin Grove to assess possible interest in forming a Croquet Section at the club.

He did an excellent job because one month later on 27th November 1982, Eric Grubb the presiding chairman of Kelvin Grove Club struck the first ball in the opening game – to the joy of an enrolment of no less than 80 members.

Five years later the Kelvin Grove Croquet section enjoyed enlarged playing facilities at the Club via two full size croquet lawns still in use today – well maintained at a high standard by the club’s Estate Management Team.

In recent years the KGCS has played host to the SA National Golf Croquet tournament and was honoured to provide the main local venue for the World Golf Croquet Championship in 2009.

The Kelvin Grove Croquet section currently has a membership of about 60, who enjoy organised club social play on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Over the years of spirited participation in inter-club competitions Kelvin Grove croquet has enjoyed a proud record of success. Many of the club’s core of experienced players hold high rankings in the Western Cape Province, and even nationally, and are keen to offer encouragement and advice to new recruits. Those who show an interest and aspire to joining in the fun and camaraderie of competitions, both within the club and in the keenly contested Robinson Cup and War Tomes Golf Croquet League inter-club matches have much to look forward to.

Kelvin Grove croquet has for the first club tournaments had record entries with over 40 active participants.
