2023 Golf Croquet Nationals – report

The 2023 Golf Croquet Nationals were held at Country Club Johannesburg (CCJ) from 13-18 November with an entry of 45 players.

Sadly this year we had only four visitors from the Western Cape but we were extremely well supported by the Eastern Cape clubs in both Port Alfred and East London.

In addition to the usual four excellent courts, the second bowls green was used which ensured that we were able to schedule all the games comfortably.  All the courts were fast and in excellent condition.

Time-Keepers were used to start the timed games which ensured that the schedule ran smoothly.

A buffet dinner and quiz was held on the Tuesday night which was won by the Agatha Quizties!  Our thanks go to our quiz mistress, Una Rowlands, for putting together a fascinating batch of questions.

A braai with entertainment by our very own Doug Ramage was held on the Thursday night.  Doug also played patrons’ requests and was ably assisted by one or two players who were under the impression that it was a karaoke evening!

A number of visiting players stayed in the Dormy House in the CCJ grounds.

Neil McHardy being presented with the Belcher Cup by Charnee of Spektrum Audiology and Chris Wakeham, tournament manager.

Judith Hanekom, Sue de Villiers, Noeline Kirsten and Ellen Wolmarans.

Neil McHardy with the Belcher Cup (AC Level Singles) and the AC Handicap Singles trophy.

Allan Clacher from East London with doubles partner Judy George from Hermanus/Somerset West.

Alfred Makhubo and Victor Dladla discussing the angles, wathed by tournament referee Les Weiss.

Trevor and Glynis Welbourne from Port Alfred, and father and son team Sami and Jibrell Bulbulia from Marks Park.
